A swanling stared at herself in the mirrored lake,
immersed in the beauty of nature’s wake.
Spring had come, and Mother’s filled the world with light.
In time, the baby bloomed into a swan to many eyes’ delights.
 
The swan was, indeed, beautiful and close to perfection.
With high praise from many a stranger’s gaze,
the swan grew vain and reveled in the attention.
Her insecurities secretly tucked away.
 
She scoffed at others and held her countenance superior.
Her manner much changed. Arrogance and contempt replaced
the sensitive interior, her modest temperament in spring.
 
One wintery day, a darkened feather found its way
entangled within her perfect white bodice.
So quickly did it overtake.
One blink and darkness changed from day.
No longer was there a goddess.
