Born to recent immigrants, I first learned about the holidays at school. It was a singular thing: just as the wind started to gust and inches of snow held the ground in their cold embrace, the atmosphere felt warmer. Faces were brighter, merrier, and more cheerful. Everyone seemed to be looking forward to something wonderful.
