I

She is my lover
(I knew she would be at our first meeting—this achromatic-skinned, black opal-eyed,
hurricane-haired blind date in rumpled gypsy clothes who replies, ‘Yeah’ to everything I say),
and her daughters love me, and it’s all so fast,
and I’m all so slow, I’m my own Greek chorus, ‘portent or not portent, that is the caution,’
yet I’m hypnotized, I believe, I’m saved, I’m besotted, amen, ah women, o men,
and instincts erupt in my soul: father; protector;
