Summertime is inextricable with corn,
stalks slowly growing as tall as the days grow long.
That’s how it was in the place where I’m from,
where every yard was a field or at least met one.

The line where my old backyard ended
begins a cornfield no one tended,
or, someone must have, every Summer it got sown,
but then no one picked it, just left the corn alone.
