Summertime is inextricable with corn, stalks slowly growing as tall as the days grow long. That’s how it was in the place where I’m from, where every yard was a field or at least met one.  The line where my old backyard ended begins a cornfield no one tended, or, someone must have, every Summer it got sown, but then no one picked it, just left the corn alone.
