I was proud when I finally reached it on my first try.
I was 7, dog paddling in my life jacket.

I held onto the ladder, listening to the echoing thrum
the waves made against the metal barrels-
A thrum like the slow beat of a bass drum
or a hushed chant from the bottom of the lake.
